Nonpayment of child support is a matter of family law

For Georgia residents who may not be familiar with the term, child support is money paid by one parent to another to ensure that any children they share have their financial needs met as they grow. When a parent fails to make timely and accurate payments to the best of their ability, a child may suffer, and the other parent may be unfairly burdened with financial strain. Non-payment of child support can become a matter of family law

Often, non-payment can result in criminal charges as well. Recently, a former college football star was found to be thousands of dollars behind in payments. Though he has no previous criminal record, he was charged with a felony.

Child support orders are legally binding. If a parent has been ordered to pay, he or she cannot just skip payments. This will result in an arrears balance, upon which interest may be charged.  Doing so may result in a loss of custody or visitation until the arrears have been taken care of. The state does not take cases of non-payment lightly, and if a parent needs help collecting the money for a child, there are steps he or she can take.

When a Georgia parent needs help establishing, modifying or enforcing a child support order, he or she may want to consider partnering with an attorney experienced in family law. An attorney may be able to help a parent ensure that all parties follow the rules set forth by the courts. A child should not have to suffer because a parent has behaved irresponsibly. An attorney may be able to assist a parent as he or she tries to collect the monies owed to his or her child.
