OSHA takes new steps related to trench safety

Some construction workers do trench-related work as part of their position. Trenches raise a range of important safety issues. This is because of the great harm that can come from trench collapses or similar accidents. Such incidents can seriously injure construction workers, or take their lives. Unfortunately, the U.S. has recently seen a spike in deaths connected to trenches.

The U.S Occupational Safety and Health Administration recently took action in response to this spike. Specifically, it has updated the National Emphasis Program (NEP) it has related to trenching/excavation collapse prevention.

The updated NEP began at start of this month. The first three months of the program will be primarily focused on accident prevention outreach and education. After that, enforcement will be a major area of focus.

The aim of the program is to help ensure employers are taking proper steps to address the safety issues related to trenches.

What happens at construction sites related to trench safety can have considerable implications for workers. How effective do you think the updated NEP will be at promoting trench safety in the U.S.?

Trench collapses are one example of workplace accidents that can leave construction workers having to cope with serious injuries and their effects. There are many concerns a construction worker may have in relation to their recovery from such injuries. This includes whether they will have the financial resources they need to help with this recovery. Workers’ comp benefits can go a long way in relieving such concerns.

This is among the reasons why it can be so alarming for construction workers when problems arise with a workers’ comp claim they filed in connection to a serious injury. Workers’ compensation attorneys can assist workers with fighting for their rights when such problems come up.
