In Georgia and elsewhere, family courts are handling child custody matters differently. Several decades ago, it was typical for mothers to win primary custody of a child. The approach has changed dramatically in recent years, and now many fathers have asserted their parental rights about family law issues.
In the popular television show, "This is Life," well-known journalist Lisa Ling spends time with people united by a common struggle or social injustice. Recently, a segment focused on fathers who feel that family law courts are still subjecting them to unfair treatment. Though many of the complaints are different, the fathers featured on the program agree that they would be able to be a better parent if some of their legal circumstances changed.
One father explained that the amount of child support he was ordered to pay was much to high to keep up with. Though he has a good job, he feels he cannot manage to keep up with the payments as ordered and may face penalties. Another man stated that his time with his children was taken away solely based on allegations from their mother, regarding his alleged mood swings at the time the couple split. A third father was never in a serious relationship with the mother of his child, and has been denied what he would consider to be a productive relationship with his child, though paternity has been established.
Georgia parents who are preparing to face the court in a matter of family law don't need to try to go it alone. An experienced attorney can be of great assistance. An attorney can explain what a client should expect, and provide solid advice designed to achieve a favorable outcome for a client.
