Police officer suffers personal injury protecting the community

Georgia residents might not know all of the ways that police officers try to protect them. While naturally, police are often the first to respond to an accident or a crime that has occurred in a community, people may be unaware of how hard officers work to prevent crime before it occurs. A recent story sheds light on such efforts, and shows how brave men and women may suffer serious personal injury while trying to protect the community that relies on them.

A Georgia police officer was patrolling a parking area, in an effort to ensure that everyone's vehicle was safe. Criminals often target parking areas, and police do their best to keep vehicles and the items contained inside them safe while an owner is not present. As the officer made the rounds, he came upon a suspicious vehicle with a man who appeared to be asleep inside.

As the officer tried to determine why the man was just hanging out in a parking lot, the man became combative. Police asked him to calmly exit the vehicle -- which was apparently rented out of another state -- and explain himself. Instead, the man fought off the officers and tried to speed off. He struck the officer, who suffered serious injury to his spine. The man drove off, leaving the injured officer lying helpless and suffering on the ground.

When a person harms another during the commission of a crime, a Georgia victim may want to seek justice. A person who is injured as a result of another party's careless action may be entitled to monetary damages or compensation. In many cases, an experienced attorney can assist a victim through all steps of the legal process and help ensure that justice is served.
